Principal Backend Engineer AI (Python)

About this role

For our client, we are seeking a Principal Backend Engineer AI (python) to join the team of a leader in the Healthcare space. This role will lead work at the intersection of data, AI-enabled capabilities, and scalable technology delivery. You will work across engineering, product, operations, and business stakeholders to translate complex requirements into practical technology solutions. The position offers the opportunity to influence architecture, execution quality, and the technology capabilities that enable long-term growth within a healthcare environment.


Location: Remote - US based candidates only, no visa sponsorship available


Compensation: $217,000 – $258,000 annually


Responsibilities

• Design and implement scalable RESTful APIs for the AI platform
• Develop Python/Java SDKs for team interactions with the AI platform
• Build backend services using Python to manage agent lifecycle and deployment
• Create secure authentication systems for multi-tenant architecture
• Implement data access layers for AI agents interacting with internal data sources
• Lead technical discussions and mentor junior engineers
• Ensure compliance with security and regulatory requirements throughout development

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or related field
• 12+ years of backend development experience; 5+ years focused on scalable Python applications
• Experience building large-scale distributed systems and microservices
• Expert-level proficiency in Python with frameworks like FastAPI, Django, and Flask
• Strong experience with database technologies (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and ORM frameworks (SQLAlchemy, Django ORM)
• Hands-on experience with agentic AI frameworks like LangChain or similar
• Ability to navigate rapidly changing technologies and requirements
