About this role
Job Summary
As the Battery Storage & MID Product Owner, you will define, develop, launch, and manage residential, commercial, and industrial energy products across their lifecycle. Your portfolio may include battery energy storage systems (BESS), MID-certified metering and monitoring solutions, hybrid inverters, energy management systems, and related gridinteraction capabilities. You will also support solar-plus storage opportunities where battery storage is paired with solar PV to improve self-consumption, backup resilience, tariff optimization, and grid flexibility. You will act as the voice of homeowners, installers, solar contractors, utilities, commercial customers, distributors, and channel partners—translating market needs, regulatory requirements, installer workflows, utility programs, and business objectives into differentiated, profitable products.
You will lead cross-functional execution across Engineering, Software, Sales, Marketing, Supply Chain, Quality, Regulatory, Finance, Customer Care, and Installer/Partner Networks. Your mission is to deliver safe, reliable, cyber-secure, standards-compliant, and commercially successful energy products that accelerate electrification, improve energy resilience, and create measurable customer value.
Key Responsibilities
Product Strategy & Business Ownership
• Own the product vision, portfolio strategy, multi-year roadmap, and lifecycle plan for battery storage and MID metering solutions.
• Build, socialize, and obtain approval for business cases covering market sizing, target segments, revenue forecasts, gross margin, installed cost, service economics, and investment requirements.
• Define product positioning, value propositions, pricing architecture, and go-tomarket priorities for residential, light commercial, commercial, and utility-adjacent segments.
• Monitor battery technology, inverter and PCS trends, metering regulation, solarplus-storage adoption, utility tariffs, demand-charge management, virtual power plants, and competitive offerings.
• Identify white-space opportunities across storage capacity, modularity, backup power, energy monitoring, solar integration, and grid-services readiness.
Market, Customer & Regulatory Requirements
• Lead Voice of Customer research with homeowners, solar installers, electrical contractors, EPCs, distributors, utilities, fleet/site operators, and internal sales teams.
• Capture market and customer requirements in the product management system; convert them into prioritized epics, product requirements, specifications, and user stories.
• Conduct competitive benchmarking across battery capacity, usable energy, roundtrip efficiency, cycle life, warranty, backup performance, installation time, monitoring, interoperability, and total cost of ownership.
• Ensure products meet applicable safety, grid-interconnection, metering accuracy, cybersecurity, data-privacy, and environmental requirements.
• Manage requirement changes through formal impact assessment, stakeholder review, and change-control processes.
Battery Storage Product Development
• Define functional and non-functional requirements for battery packs/modules, battery management systems (BMS), power conversion systems (PCS)/hybrid inverters, enclosures, thermal management, communications, and installation accessories.
• Define requirements for AC-coupled and DC-coupled storage architectures, backup/whole-home or partial-home power, generator integration, load management, and expansion capability.
• Support solar-plus storage use cases, including PV coupling, solar selfconsumption, surplus-solar charging, backup during outages, and coordinated dispatch of solar generation and battery discharge. Storage can extend the value of solar by storing excess generation for use when solar production is unavailable.
• Partner with Engineering, Software, Controls, Quality, and Manufacturing to prioritize the development backlog, resolve tradeoffs, and maintain MVP scope.
• Ensure alignment among customer outcomes, technical feasibility, safety, serviceability, installation efficiency, cybersecurity, grid compliance, and productcost targets.
• Support integration with energy management, dynamic tariffs, time-of-use optimization, demand response, backup automation, and virtual power plant / fleet-management platforms.
MID Metering & Energy Monitoring
• Own product requirements for MID-certified metering, sub-metering, energy monitoring, and measurement solutions where applicable.
• Define accuracy classes, measurement points, data granularity, communication interfaces, display/user experience, installation requirements, and certification/test needs.
• Partner with Regulatory, Quality, Engineering, and external notified bodies or certification partners to maintain compliance throughout the product lifecycle.
• Ensure metering data supports billing, energy optimization, solar self-consumption, storage dispatch, reporting, and customer-facing insights.
• Monitor changes in metering standards, metrology requirements, data formats, and regional certification obligations.
Cost, Quality & Commercial Management
• Own target product cost, bill-of-materials (BOM) cost, landed cost, warranty cost, service cost, and gross-margin objectives.
• Track BOM evolution through development; lead feature-versus-cost tradeoff decisions with Engineering, Supply Chain, Finance, and Sourcing.
• Develop pricing strategies across retail, distribution, installer/project, strategic account, and utility-program channels.
• Support quality planning, failure-mode analysis, field-failure reduction, warranty analytics, and corrective-action implementation.
• Monitor competitive pricing, channel economics, incentive programs, and market dynamics before and after launch.
Field Trials, Validation & Launch
• Define pilot objectives, success criteria, site-selection criteria, participant profiles, deployment plans, and data collection requirements.
• Assess product readiness for fiel...
