About this role

Company Description
Join iLOF as a senior technical contributor working at the intersection of physical science, Data Science and experimental technology.
You will help the team understand what complex measurements represent, distinguish meaningful signal from technical variation, and develop reliable approaches for turning raw experimental data into useful biological insights and modelling inputs.
Working directly with experimental scientists and engineers, you will influence how experiments are designed, how data is collected and how analytical findings guide further technology development.
This is an individual-contributor role with technical mentoring responsibilities. At Senior level, you will independently own complex analytical projects. At Lead level, you will additionally guide methods and technical decisions across projects, becoming a reference point for the interpretation and analysis of physical signals.
Job Description
Own analytical work from scientific problem framing and experimental design through analysis, modelling, validation and interpretation.
Investigate how measurement processes, sample properties and experimental conditions influence observed data.
Prototype, develop and evaluate suitable signal-processing, preprocessing, feature-extraction and modelling approaches for complex experimental datasets.
Identify, characterise and assess sources of technical variation and artefacts, evaluate their implications for data quality, reproducibility and downstream conclusions, and develop appropriate methods to correct or compensate for them.
Work with experimental scientists and engineers to design targeted experiments that resolve uncertainty and improve data quality and data generation processes.
Evaluate whether analytical approaches remain reliable across instruments, acquisition conditions and datasets.
Develop reusable analytical methods and communicate their assumptions, limitations and appropriate use.
Mentor colleagues, contribute to technical reviews and support scientific publications and other research outputs.

Additional expectations at Lead level
Define and maintain methodological standards for physical-signal analysis across projects.
Guide difficult or recurring technical decisions and identify problems requiring a shared solution.
Develop the team’s ability to reason about measurement systems and experimental evidence.
Qualifications
Who we are looking for
You enjoy understanding how data is generated as much as analysing it. You approach unexpected results with an experimental mindset, forming hypotheses and designing practical ways to test them.
You combine physical intuition, quantitative depth and strong implementation skills. You communicate openly across disciplines and can turn complex investigations into clear recommendations.
Qualifications
PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering or a related quantitative or experimental discipline; a Master’s degree with substantial relevant experience will also be considered.
Strong experience analysing physical signals or complex measurement-based datasets.
Sound understanding of signal processing, statistical analysis and machine learning.
Demonstrated ability to design investigations, work with raw experimental data and assess alternative explanations for observed patterns.
Strong scientific programming skills and experience developing reproducible analytical workflows.
Evidence of independently delivering complex scientific analyses; Lead candidates should also demonstrate methodological influence across projects and technical mentoring.
Experience in spectroscopy, photonics, sensor systems, analytical chemistry or related fields is particularly valuable. Prior Raman or FTIR expertise is advantageous.
The opportunity
Become a technical reference within a team where your analysis can directly influence experiments, measurement technology and the quality of the data underpinning biomedical applications.
