Project managers generally oversee projects from the initial concept to final delivery. Based on the established goals, deadlines and budget, they create a plan and assign tasks to the team. As work progresses, they help ensure the team finishes each milestone on time and that workers have sufficient resources.

Project managers handle the majority of internal and external communication. For example, they may establish goals with collaborators and various departments. They may also make changes to meet budget limitations and help team members resolve delays and conflicts.

Project manager duties and responsibilities:

Project managers oversee projects that often require cross-functional collaboration. For example, a project manager may work alongside the accounting and design teams when preparing a product launch. They also typically communicate with employees, vendors and clients.

Common duties include:

Creating project plans that include tasks, milestones and timelines
Identifying and finding solutions for potential risks, such as budget constraints or supplier delays
Selecting employees for the project team, including project coordinators or assistant project managers, and delegating tasks
Managing the budget and allocating resources
Monitoring progress and setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound (SMART) goals
