About this role

Senior Data Engineer, Marketplace Data Integration
Remote (US) · Full-time

Company Overview

b.well is solving healthcare’s fragmentation problem with our FHIR-based health data management platform. The platform connects data from EHRs, wearables, portals, and other sources, while our intelligence engine personalizes the consumer experience. By simplifying the complex healthcare ecosystem, we make it easy and convenient for consumers to engage and take action—whether it’s scheduling care, setting reminders, accessing health data, and more. For our clients, this means better health outcomes, operational efficiency, and stronger consumer engagement.

Position Overview

We’re building a platform that companies use to create marketplaces that help people find the right kind of provider and book an appointment. Consumer apps, health systems, payer and employer partners deliver it to their members through embeddable experiences, SDKs, an API, and an MCP server. Every one of those bookings depends on accurate provider schedules, and that’s where you come in.

You’ll own how schedule inventory gets into the marketplaces. You’ll integrate health systems and telehealth networks through batch feeds and real-time APIs, normalize their data into standards-conformant FHIR, and keep availability fresh enough that every booking either confirms or fails gracefully. You’ll take each new supplier from zero to production, then own it once it’s live.

This is a hands-on, AI-native role on a small team. You’ll use coding agents and reusable AI skills to move faster on mappings, tests, and boilerplate, with the judgment to keep the work correct, tested, and PHI-safe.

What you’ll do

* Build and operate supplier integrations through batch channels (EHR exports, SFTP extracts, SMART Scheduling Links bulk-publish feeds, Delta Sharing) and real-time APIs (IHE ITI Scheduling $find, $hold, and $book; EHR scheduling APIs; telehealth network APIs).
* Normalize supplier data into FHIR Slot, Schedule, Location, PractitionerRole, and HealthcareService resources, including visit-type mapping, time zones and daylight-saving time, NPI-based provider linking, location de-duplication, and telehealth state licensure.
* Build idempotent, incremental loads with freshness metrics, and the confirm-at-booking flow that handles stale inventory, taken slots, and expired holds.
* Keep production healthy with orchestration, alerting, on-call, and root cause analysis that drives fixes to completion.
* Handle PHI and encrypted files safely, and write the unit and integration tests that keep pipelines trustworthy.
* Build reusable supplier adapters, and AI skills others can build on.

What we’re looking for

* 6+ years in data engineering, data integration, health IT, or healthcare interoperability.
* Experience owning production pipelines end to end, including on-call. You’ve been the person who takes a new source from zero to production.
* Experience integrating external partner data through both batch file feeds and APIs.
* Strong Python and SQL, with solid ETL/ELT, change data capture, and incremental, idempotent processing.
* Comfort with API authorization (OAuth 2.0, SMART Backend Services, mTLS) and file ingestion (SFTP, decryption, CSV, XLSX, NDJSON, HL7 v2).
* Experience working with PII and/or PHI under HIPAA.
* Daily use of AI coding tools like Claude Code, with the judgment to know when a deterministic rule beats an LLM call.
* You find a way forward when a supplier sends incomplete extracts or changes formats, and you turn a loosely specified feed into a clear scope and plan.
* You hold a high bar in review and say no to integrations that aren’t ready, kindly and clearly.
* You drive work to landed, not merged, and you own the result.

Nice to have

* Experience in healthcare technology, working with PHI under HIPAA.
* Strong working knowledge of FHIR models, APIs, and implementation guides such as US Core or Bulk FHIR, including mapping to and from FHIR, profiling, and extensions.
* Experience with FHIR platforms and tools, whether commercial or open-source (e.g., HAPI, Smile, Medplum), or having built your own.
* Participation in the FHIR community, such as HL7 or non-HL7 working groups, Connectathons, IG contributions, or presentations at events like DevDays or HIMSS.
* FHIR training or certifications, such as FHIR Implementer or Advanced Developer.
* Domain knowledge in specialized FHIR areas such as clinical reasoning, analytics, FHIRPath, search, terminology, or AI.
* Experience with the IHE ITI Scheduling IG, SMART Scheduling Links, Epic Open Scheduling, Oracle Health FHIR scheduling, or athenahealth APIs.
* Experience with HL7 v2 SIU scheduling messages, telehealth network integrations, or provider reference data such as NPPES.
* Experience with Prefect, Spark, Databricks, or Kafka.

What success looks like

* New suppliers go from first contact to production quickly, and each one makes the next one easier.
* Members see availability that’s fresh, and bookings confirm or fail gracefully instead of surprising anyone.
* Freshness and pipeline health are visible, and you catch problems before partners or members do.
* The sandbox gives partner developers realistic supplier data to build against.
* No sensitive data leaves approved boundaries.
